Hertfordshire County Council Art Collection
The Hertfordshire County Art Collection was established in the 1940s with the express purpose of giving Hertfordshire school children access to works of art. The client wanted to more actively promote this service to schools with a new brochure to accompany an existing on-line service. The brief was to produce a brochure showing a selection of the available art, presented thematically according to the art curriculum. In addition to this brochure there were to be a set of project work sheets related to pieces from the collection.
Following those discussions with the project leader to decide upon design style and presentation solutions. I designed a page layout that was clean and well structured. There were eight themes, split into sub sections relating to curriculum modules. I gave each theme one or two pages, except two, which were able to share a single page. In addition there were the front and back covers, plus two introductory pages.
The brief included selecting the images for the brochure from a list of about 1,100. This meant that I had to understand some of the curriculum in order to make a proper judgement. I designed the layout to enable 18 images of different dimensions and proportions to sit on each page without making it look cluttered. Room was given for a page signpost and the captions. This layout gave the brochure the structure it needed to help the reader access the themes without confusion.
The front cover was designed with a full bleed picture which had movement to give a dynamic feel to the brochure. The work sheets used the design themes from the brochure.
